“Sorry,” Nick said, sheepishly. “I was just lost in thought about how much I love rescue dogs. Then I got distracted by thinking about how to be a good father to my son, since I’m a single dad. Then I got distracted from that by thinking about whether six abs are enough, or if I should push myself for eight. I don’t want to be vain, but physical health is so important to me since my grandfather perished in a tragic accident of not having enough abs. He was my best friend, and every night, I sing the folk melodies he sang to me as a child to my own son. Then I cry, because I’m not afraid to, and because tenderness is beauty, and beauty is strength, and strength is abs.”

Chrissy took a step toward him, but he continued.

“And even if I hadn’t been thinking about all of that,” he said, “I would have been distracted by the language lessons I was listening to. I’m trying to learn Romanian, because I once saw a film that starred a Romanian actress who I so admired that I vowed then and there that I would learn Romanian in the off chance I ever met her, so that I could tell her how much her art meant to me, how much I respected her, and how much I knew that she, a woman in her eighties, could teach me. And then I would sit quietly at her feet and learn. That is,” he clarified, “if she wanted. If not, I would simply say, ‘Mulțumesc’—that’s Romanian for thank you, as I’m sure you know—and go home forever changed.”

Chrissy tried to say something, but Nick wasn’t done.

“And of course, being around all these candy canes just makes you think,” he said. “You know? About how open communication and trust are so important in a relationship, and how I hope that if I ever get married again, that it’s to my best friend, and that every Christmas we’ll buy matching pajama sets and take photos in front of the fire, and everyone who saw the pictures would think, ‘You know, usually I find these photos cloying and obnoxious, proof positive that the spark has left the relationship, but somehow, with these two, it makes me believe that love is real and alive and that as they age, their relationship will only become steamier.’ And I’ll say, ‘And doesn’t that reindeer print bring out my wife’s beautiful eyes?’ And they’ll be shocked to admit it, but they’ll agree that somehow it does, and then later, when I quit social media to spend more time with orphans, everyone will mourn that they no longer can look at that photo, because it made them feel things they haven’t felt since the first time they fell in love. Anyway,” he sighed, “I was just thinking about all of that, so I didn’t hear you come up. So what’s up, Chrissy?”
